Karen Oldfield

I joined the Woodland Trust as a volunteer in early 2019, and shortly afterwards attended a photographic workshop organised by the Woodland Trust. The numerous volunteers are all a lovely bunch of people, who like to be out enjoying and protecting nature, here on Smithills Estate. I have always enjoyed taking photos, but previously using the automatic settings. I’ve learnt lots of tips and techniques, and my photography has definitely helped me see, and appreciate how beautiful nature is. I particularly love light, shadows and texture, as well as bright colourful images. It’s like painting a picture with your camera.

Being outdoors in natural settings is vital to our mental and physical well being. I would like to encourage you to have a go, even using your phone. There is so much to inspire you on Smithills Estate, be it the grand scenery or the small detail of individual plants, leaves and insects.

Some of my photos during lockdown are taken from my home garden in Radcliffe, as I was not able to venture out to Smithills, initially. At least it enabled me to practise close-up shots.
